There are two kinds of asphalt sealers used today. One is coal-tar based, and the other is water-based. The coal-tar based asphalt sealer lasts longer and can protect the asphalt better against snow, rain, sun, ice, and antifreeze. Many of the water-base sealers are sold by commercial sealer contractors, and the local hardware shops may have some brands in five-gallon buckets. You may seal your driveway yourself but do not expect the sand to be mixed in the sealer as the contractors use. To do this, you have to use a big tank to mix the sand and sealer like the seal coating used by the contractors. The sand gives the sealer a surface which is more textured thus keeping the asphalt from being very slippery when it is wet. It also enables the sealer to last for long.

There are two basic applications used in applying the asphalt sealer. The first uses a squeegee and uses the hand to apply the entire surface. This is also how the homeowners apply the sealers on their own. The second application is putting the sealer in a holding tank which pumps out the sealer through a hose onto the asphalt. The contractors spray twice for two even strong coats. At times, the agitator is used with the tank to mix the sealer.
